Taxonomy

Macaca arctoides is a monotypic species (no subspecies).

 

Occurrence

Cambodia, southwestern China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan provinces), northeastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura provinces), Lao PDR, northwestern Peninsular Malaysia, northern Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

 

It was formerly found in eastern Bangladesh, but may now be extinct there.

 

The species has been introduced to Hong Kong.

Vulnerable

 

 

 

Seeing this Species

 

Reported throughout central Vietnam and the Central Highlands, except in eastern Lam Dong and Dak Lak Provinces. These areas are mainly covered by secondary forest which might not be a suitable habitat for Stump-Tailed Macaque whereas Northern Pig-Tailed Macaque occur (Nadler 2012).
